I am an Egyptologist and linguist. I spend most of my working time reading ancient texts, and tend to comment about them here sometimes. I teach a little, and if the new programme we have designed for our students works out, I’ll be teaching a lot more in the upcoming years. I love teaching, and as a childfree person, I take it as my chance to leave a lasting mark on this world.
Belief- and lifestyle-wise, I am a non-believer with a great love for pagan ways. I’d call myself pagan if I weren’t so damn atheistic :) I am single, childfree and asexual (and this, hoooray, is my LJ coming-out). It took me a long way to realize the latter, but it’s a position that brings harmony and balance into my life. I’ve come to terms with being attracted to minds rather than bodies, and longing for intimacy on a purely mental plane.
I am assuming you stumbled upon me over one of the communities I comment in, and have no idea who you’re dealing with.
I’m your neighbourhood oddity. Right, I’m weird in many ways, but usually nice, so don’t worry and read on.
I come from the Czech Republic, but have lived around the world. To be precise, the countries where I have lived for a year or longer include the U.S.A., Egypt, Switzerland, Germany and Sweden. I speak Czech, English and German (and a bunch of other languages in a very imperfect way), I write almost exclusively in English. I tend to intersperse my writing with words of other languages – that’s just a little idiosyncrasy of mine. Comes free with being a linguist and a translator, I suppose. I love Latin, Greek and Chinese.
My interests are as variegated as they’re odd, and I tend to obsess about one or the other at irregular intervals. They include:
- Hieroglyphs and Demotic (yeah, my job is my hobby) - Chinese language, script and culture - Martial arts and the jian (I’m a long time taiji and taekwondo practitioner.) - Illusion, mentalism and the mind in general - Memory and mnemonics - Books (reading and writing), sci-fi, fantasy, speculative fiction and non-fiction - Matteo Ricci (yeah, I have a – purely platonic – crush on a priest - but if you read his biography, you’ll understand why) - Mushrooming - Dragons - Magic and witchcraft - Running (my newest obsession; I maintain a running journal at run_dragon_run, which is not friends-locked) - The gym (I lift heavy and I love it, I'm currently preparing for a contest in bodyfitness) - And, last but not least, my fandoms: Stargate-SG1, Torchwood, NCIS, The Mentalist, Sherlock (2010 BBC series), Game of Thrones, Sons of Anarchy, The Borgias. I'm getting into Breaking Bad right now.
I am usually rather open minded and outspoken. My friends say I am a bit too honest and outspoken. I prefer others to be honest with me. I seriously think it’s better to talk about problems than let them bug and poison our minds.
I write little ficlets and translate lyrics. I guess I’m one of those universally-loathed English is not my first language but I’ll write anyway-authors, but I love English and I am trying to do it justice.
I love music, from classical to progressive-electronic. My favourite bands tend to be female-fronted metal: Within Temptation, Stream of Passion, Nightwish, Midnattsol, Memoira, Epica.
My favourite movie of all times is Prestige. If you haven’t seen it, you’ve got to. Seriously. Christopher Nolan is my film god, and Memento and Inception belong to my favourites too. A totally different, but deeply moving and inspiring film I love is The Dead Poet’s Society.
My favourite authors are hard to pick, but I’ll go with China Mieville (his dystopias are, for the lack of a better word, awesome) and Alastair Reynolds (sci-fi dystopias, see a pattern?). I've recently fallen in love with Patrick Rothfuss' Kingslayer trilogy.
If I were to pick a single book that has influenced my life, it would be Henry David Thoreau’s Walden: I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I have not lived.
My dragon layout and this beautiful userinfo scheme comes from scholarslayouts (I added the "Prestige" quote). The awesome Patrick Jane animated mood theme comes from klanvang. My second awesome Patrick Jane animated mood theme comes from franblack. I switch between the two ...
